Continue Patronizing S. Rapids Rd Businesses During Construction
County Highway crews will be building a hard surfaced roadway for northbound traffic beginning early Wednesday morning in an effort to assist both motorists and local business customers alike.
Additional traffic control features including signage, barricades and barrels will assist drivers in a safe and comfortable journey from Calumet Avenue to Custer Street.
"We look forward to the return of our usual customers as a result of the County's efforts to help us out in the face of the road construction," Bubba MacDonald commented.
"The good news is that with the big jump the contractor got on the project coupled with cooperation from Mother Nature, the construction could be completed earlier than the expected project completion date of August 11.

It's precisely because of the development of business in that area that necessitated the reconstruction to accommodate increased traffic flow.

I guess Manitowoc failed to renew their crystal ball license.
It is impossible to foresee future traffic patterns, due in part to the evolution any city goes through. The I-43 sector of Manitowoc was underused in the past not only here but in other cities as well. This has taken away slightly from our downtown but more so has impeded the growth or even the ability to sustain life over at our 2 near-defunct malls. Manitowoc is taking advantage of consumer demand, and consumers are demanding convienent shopping. This inherently leads to a higher traffic flow. Could our cities forefathers have known that when old hwy 141 was built Lowe's - founded in 1946 - would 60 years later have an affect on it?
We must evolve with progress, not ignore it.

Bloggers, you are all doing a great job in looking at the development of our I-43 corridor at Calumet Avenue. Good questions and insightful responses.
We should also remember that last year, duing the development of Harbortown, we pretty much had most of Calumet Ave ripped up and you simply can't end both east-west traffic and north-south traffic at the same time.
And contrary to popular opinion, we work within the framework of our city's and county's budgets when building roadsto keep taxes under control.
On the issue or RECRUITING BUSINESS, we've filled most of the usable Mirro buildings with Koenig-Vits, Tramontina and Orion Energies and other home grown manufacturers like Jagemann Stamping, Jagemann Plating, Burger Boat, Kaysun, Manitowoc Tool and Machining, MCM, etc. have soaked up our remaining employees.
Lowes and Carcoal Grill alone have hired hundreds of local citizens!
